SPRINGFIELD – A bill that passed in the Illinois House would prevent law enforcement from initiating a traffic stop because of a hanging item like air fresheners, rosaries, or disability placards from their rearview mirror while driving. The current law prohibits items hanging from the mirror or affixed to the windshield, claiming it can obstruct a motorist’s vision. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is looking to eliminate that violation as a pretext for a traffic stop that he says encourages discriminatory practices. Illinois is just one of a handful of states with laws banning items from hanging on a rearview mirror.
