Harry Styles shares cinematic video for ‘American Girls’

Harry Styles performs on NBC's "TODAY" Show at Rockefeller Plaza on May 19^ 2022 in New York City.

Shortly after releasing his new album Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, Harry Styles has dropped the cinematic music video for the single “American Girls.”

The video sees Styles as the “star” of a fictional action film. It opens with him pretending to speed down the road on a motorcycle while positioned in front of a special-effects screen, his yellow tie dramatically whipping in the “wind” from an electric fan. From there, the singer jumps into a series of high-energy sequences — driving a car beneath a flaming truck, sprinting away from a desert blast, and performing other action-packed scenes that switch between real outdoor locations and studio sets designed to imitate them.

Speaking ahead of the album’s release, Styles explained that watching several of his closest friends fall in love and get married inspired the track: “the song to me is like, it’s actually quite a lonely song in a lot of ways. I watched like my three closest friends get married, and actually seeing them trust in something and risk something to find something truly fulfilling in a way that isn’t as like shiny and on paper as exciting. Watching them get married, I was like, ‘I’m single, so I’m having all the fun.’ And ‘American Girls’ is actually about watching them get married, and there just is a magic when you find the right person that you want to be with. I think watching them do that and seeing that it doesn’t come without any uncertainty, it doesn’t come without any risk.”

The visual arrived just hours after Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally debuted with 12 tracks, including the Billboard Hot 100-topping lead single “Aperture.” To celebrate the album’s launch, Styles also performed a one-night-only show at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena in front of 20,500 fans to perform the new album in full, ending with fan favorites “Golden,” “Watermelon Sugar,” “As It Was,” “Sign of the Times.” Harry Styles. One Night in Manchester is now available to stream on Netflix.
