LaSalle man accused of murdering infant son will stand trial

OTTAWA – A LaSalle man accused of suffocating his infant son is fit for trial. 23-year-old Kenneth Herbst appeared in court Thursday with Public Defense Tim Cappellini to announce to Judge Chris H. Ryan that Herbst’s psychiatric exam did not deem him unfit to face trial. Capellini requested an additional status hearing to prepare for trial, and he says expert witnesses are in line to testify. Herbst will appear in court on February 20th. He faces first-degree murder charges stemming from a spring 2019 incident where authorities say he allegedly smothered his 2-month-old son.
